The Battle of the Isles
20th April 2010
Eriskay G. C. will play host to Orkney G. C. In an annual challenge match that seeks to both promote the spirit of the game of golf and link the communities of Orkney and Inverness.
The event will be held at Torvean G. C. In a reduced Ryder Cup style over the 3rd & 4th June for the prize of a framed and signed Jack Nicklaus flag that commemorates his last Open appearance in 2005. Eriskay G. C. Are seeking revenge in the match that saw the Orcadians triumph emphatically in the inaugural event on home soil last year. Founding Member and Honorary President Mr. Willie Rusk said “Whilst Eriskay G. C. Is a club without a permanent home Torvean G. C. was chosen because it provides a challenge for golfers of all levels. The quality of the course and the friendliness of the Club support the intentions of the Match. It provides a fair challenge for all, even if the trees are a bit higher than on Orkney at present!”
Eriskay G. C. has its origins on the island and play was only made possible due to the endeavours of a few hardy souls. Competition for the land for other purposes forced a closure and the home has been at Torvean G. C. Since 2000. The will to keep the Club alive has never diminished and the original Trophies are still played for annually. Two of these are open to non-members and are the “Whisky Galore” Eriskay Gents and Senior Opens. The “Whisky Galore” motif coming as a result of the sinking of the “SS Politician” and the film that followed – and aligned sponsorship has come from Highland Park Distillery in recent times. These events consistently attract a full entry and provide a landmark in the golfing calendar each year. Enquiries for this year can be made through Torvean G. C. website.
The teams will consist of 16 players with a mix of foursomes, fourballs on day 1 with the singles completing the event on day 2. The “Home” team come from far and near – such is the popularity of the Club in engaging with the development of the game. Although only the second time to be held the event is gathering its own following on both sides of the Pentland Firth. Local businesses have sponsored the events shirts and telephone enquiries received in relation to helping out or coming to watch. If you are free on the dates why not come along and enjoy what is hoped will be another great event.
